The Power Horizon and the Mindset Trap: How Invisible Forces Shape Our Lives

Image
In our day-to-day experiences, many of us encounter challenges that feel personal and immediate. Whether it's a demanding boss, a tough client, or even personal relationships, we often focus on what's right in front of us. But what if I told you that these challenges are just a part of a much bigger picture, and that our inability to see the larger forces at play is what keeps us stuck? This concept is what we call the power horizon —a boundary that limits our awareness and forces us to concentrate on what’s near, while the true sources of power and influence remain hidden just out of sight. What is the Power Horizon? The power horizon can be thought of as an invisible line that separates our immediate, visible experiences from the distant forces that truly shape them. Much like the main character in The Truman Show , who was unaware that his entire life was controlled by an external force, we too are often blind to the larger political, social, and economic factors that influ...

Finding Strength in Uncertainty: Lessons of Inner Peace and Spiritual Growth

Image
As I stepped out of the home I had lived in for 19 years, with two debts in my name, I was afraid of what the future held. Having never experienced living with others, moving into a new home with unfamiliar people frightened me even more than the financial burden I carried. I believe in not boasting about the good we do, so I’ll leave out the details of why the debts were under my name. Regardless, this was the moment in my life when I had to gather all my strength to survive, knowing it was just a temporary phase that would eventually pass. I worked longer hours just to earn enough to cover my essentials. I am blessed that the new life I started wasn’t as daunting as I had imagined. This is when I realized that what we tell ourselves truly matters. From that day forward, I began seeking inner happiness. People often see me as a bubbly person—not because I don’t experience hardships, but because I refuse to let those challenges control my inner peace. The lessons I learned then ar...

Cybervetting in Hiring: A Double-Edged Sword

Image
In today’s digital age, the hiring process extends beyond traditional methods like resumes and interviews. With the rise of social media and other online platforms, many employers have turned to cybervetting—reviewing candidates' online presence to assess their suitability for a role. This approach offers unique insights into a potential hire but also raises important ethical questions, particularly concerning privacy and bias. Cybervetting allows employers to see candidates’ behavior, values, and communication styles in an informal, public setting. It typically involves reviewing social media profiles, blogs, and other forms of digital footprints. Employers are often seeking clues about how a candidate may fit into the company's culture or behave in the workplace. A 2018 CareerBuilder survey found that 70% of employers use social networking sites to screen candidates, and 57% reported finding content that led them to disqualify applicants. This growing reliance on cybervetti...

Understanding and Addressing the Mindset of Gen-Z Graduates

Image
Across various industries, supervisors and senior management are increasingly encountering challenges with the mindset of Gen-Z graduates entering the workforce. A common concern is that many of these young professionals struggle with receiving constructive criticism and may become easily discouraged when not continuously praised. This issue is not isolated but has become a nationwide concern, demanding a deeper understanding and a strategic response. The root of this mindset can be traced to a few key factors. Gen-Z has grown up in an era of instant gratification, where social media platforms have often rewarded them with immediate feedback, likes, and positive reinforcement. This has shaped a tendency to seek constant validation. Additionally, in some cases, educational environments have emphasized participation and effort over resilience and the ability to handle criticism. As a result, many graduates enter the workforce with an expectation of continuous affirmation rather than cons...

Transforming Mindsets in the Organization: Beyond Training to Cultivate True Change

As an aspiring Organizational Psychologist, I've observed that despite numerous training initiatives, organizations especially in the public sector often struggle to achieve a genuine transformation in the way their employees perceive and approach their work. This issue can be attributed to several underlying factors that prevent these training programs from being genuinely transformative. To address this challenge, it’s essential to delve into these factors and implement strategies that go beyond traditional training methods, fostering a culture of continuous learning and critical thinking. Reasons that training might not be effective Many training sessions focus primarily on procedural knowledge and specific skills, often failing to encourage critical thinking and transformative learning. These programs might address only the symptoms of problems rather than their root causes, leading to superficial improvements that do not alter the fundamental ways in which employees think and ...

Secrets of returning the favour

Image
Over the years I have been persuaded by people to take certain actions that sometimes are against my own principles. I always wanted to know the reasons why I acted out in that way. In search of the answers for my own actions, I came across the concept of persuasion. It is possible to persuade people to do something even though they might not have a positive attitude about that behaviour at all.  This is a type of persuasion technique called Compliance.  According to Robert Cialdini (2007) there are 6 principles of compliance: reciprocation, consistency, social validation, liking, scarcity, and authority .  Principle of RECIPROCATION is reason why you feel you must return the favour.  Interesting fact is we all have been persuaded in someway or another. Everyday we are subconsciously influenced through social media, people in our lives, politicians, businesses etc. There is a famous saying "Do good to others and good will return to you". There is an art and science ...
