Secrets of returning the favour

Over the years I have been persuaded by people to take certain actions that sometimes are against my own principles. I always wanted to know the reasons why I acted out in that way. In search of the answers for my own actions, I came across the concept of persuasion. It is possible to persuade people to do something even though they might not have a positive attitude about that behaviour at all.  This is a type of persuasion technique called Compliance.  According to Robert Cialdini (2007) there are 6 principles of compliance: reciprocation, consistency, social validation, liking, scarcity, and authority .  Principle of RECIPROCATION is reason why you feel you must return the favour.  Interesting fact is we all have been persuaded in someway or another. Everyday we are subconsciously influenced through social media, people in our lives, politicians, businesses etc. There is a famous saying "Do good to others and good will return to you". There is an art and science ...

How do you build confidence muscle?

photography by: Nausham Waheed When you experience new things in life we all feel Fear. Fear is a coping machanism to detect the danger in our surrounding. However this fear at times might be the reason weakening our confidence muscle. We took a short interview with Coaching Studio Co-founder Mariyam Mohamed on how to build our confidence muscle. 1. Do you feel Fear when you go on stage? Yes, I do but I let it be my drive 2. How do you do that? I practice before I go on stage. I feel my audience reactions before hand. I do all the acts I want to do on stage. I even visualise it to make real.   3. "Visualise to make it real" What do you mean by this statement? You see visualisation happens in your conscious mind but when you feel what you visualise you are imprinting that image to your subconscious mind. Subconscious mind will not know from what is real and not. This is the mind that controls you Autonomic Nervous System(ANTS). It is where your heart is. It controls 95% of you...

DO YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME AT WORK?

I use to spend a lot of time at work but my results aren't equal to the time and effort I put into my work. Have you ever experienced like this in your life? When I looked deeper into what is happening to me I came across the principle 80-20 rule by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto. This was popularized by business theorist Joseph Juran in the business world.  According to Pareto if you put 20% time you get 80% results and if you put 80% time you get 20% results.  How is that possible? This all depend on your focus. My mentor Tony Robbins always says that “Whatever you consistently think about and focus upon you move toward.”  In whatever you do 20% is based on action and 80% is always based on psychology.  If you want to practically apply this statement to your life you must apply this formular to your life.  PURPOSE+PRIORITY=PRODUCTIVITY Every time you make a decision or a change, ask yourself, “Does this serve my purpose?” Remember if you don’t know your pu...

Do you practice priming?

At times life can be challenging and many people tend to build negative images in their heads that impacts their thoughts, feelings and actions. As a result they feel tired and down most of the time. They associate negative events that happened in their life to current events. Consequently they forget the moments of achievements in their life. The exposure of an individual to a stimulus that would influence the response to a second stimulus is called priming. Priming works by activating an association or representation in  memory  just before another stimulus or task is introduced. Priming phenomenon occurs at a subconscious level and has a huge impact on our day to day activity. Priming can be positive or negative and depends on the thoughts that you hold in your mind. For instance you might jump up at creaks and noises that are similar to a horror movie you have watched days or weeks before. You might feel a shark is about to attack you if you swim in deep water with t...

One of the best experience in my life....

“Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never ever have enough.” Oprah Winfrey   Gratitude is a powerful tool that we all can apply to our life. There are many different ways you can express gratitude, such as by your thoughts, feelings and actions. The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness. There are psychological, physical and social benefits you get when you become grateful for people, things and situations in your life.  Source: positivepsychology.com/neuroscience-of-gratitude/ Reflecting back on my life there are many life lessons I am grateful for. Those experiences have helped me to grow as an individual. It allowed me to understand that human beings always crave for love, appreciation and belongingness. It also aided me to realize that people want to feel important. So today I want to thank you all for letting me feel the s...

Choosing a life of abundance

I use to think a life of abundance was only for the privileged and not for me as my mindset was constraining me financially, physically, mentally and emotionally. I was envious of the word “abundance” which I truly never understood the real meaning of, until recently. Let me take you back to a chapter in my life where there was a time I ate only biscuits for breakfast, lunch and dinner because we couldn’t afford a real meal. Let me take back to a time where I slept on just a mattress on the floor and shared one room with my siblings and mother. Yes, I have experienced scarcity in my life and I used to believe that was how people must live. In fact I believed that living with scarcity is the only choice in life for the underprivileged like me. To be honest I use to be a cheerleader of the victim mindset for a long time. Recently I realized that anyone can choose to live a life of abundance. My mentor Lisa Nicole define abundance as “privileged circumstances.” Basically what it mean...

“I shifted my worrying and doubt to a strength” Mariyam Mohamed

My parents were separated when I was a baby. I grew up without a father and at times I wonder how it would have been if my father took me to school and went to my parent meetings. How it would have been, if he was actively involved in my life? How different I would turnout? How different people would have treated me? How different would it be if I had a single picture of myself with my father? These are some doubts that kept going in my mind for many years but despite all these doubts I believe my father is a good person and I still do. Why would someone doubt and then have a logical explanation in their mind? Why am I telling this chapter of my life that is so deeply rooted in my belief system? Today I am learning more about myself than I have ever learned in the past 3 decades. Ever since I started my journey as a coach I find new ways to heal myself. When you experience trauma through a long period of time it becomes a part of your belief system but this all can be changed by a simp...

Do you know what really happens to you when you are stressed?

[cont..] The two areas of the brain that are mainly affected by stress are the Pre-frontal cortex and the Hippocampus. Pre-frontal cortex is the area of the brain that is right behind our forehead and the hippocampus is located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain. These areas are responsible for human intellect functions, executive functions, planning, memory, learning, time management, basic organizational skills, self-control and emotional well-being.  As we age Pre-frontal Cortex is sensitive to thinning which results in impaired memory and cognitive decline.  The thinning process of Pre-frontal Cortex accelerates when you are under stress for a long period of time. Further, due to stress there is an increase in activities in the primitive parts of the brain such as Amygdala. Amygdala is commonly known as part of the brain that plays a role in processing fear. When the level of fear increases it increases the anxiety level of oneself.  Other problems we face due t...

Do you know what really happens to you when you are stressed?

Scientific research on the brain using Functional Magnetic Imagery (MRI) show that the brain can be made to grow at any age. “Human brain actually deteriorate and shrink around age of 26-27 and by the time we reach 40 the human brain atrophies shrinks at 5% per decade. Yet it is possible to lay down new brain cells and increase our brain until the day we die.” Professor Ronnie Newman, Research Scientist. According to the professor, one of the most important thing is to keep stress level in check because stress has a strong detrimental effect on the brain. How do our brain cells work? The above figure is a depiction of a human brain cell which is known as Neurons. Our brain cells have finger like protrusions which is called dendritic spine. At the end of each dendritic spine is a receptor site. The hollow space between two dendritic spines is called a synapse. The communication between the brain cells affects the way we learn, remember and how we experience the world around us...
